In 2004 we hosted a brand new steam locomotive ‘Dame Ann’ for trials.
‘Dame Ann’ was built by the Stirland family of Exmoor Steam Railway in North Devon for a customer in America. The largest locomotive built to date at Exmoor, she is based on our Hunslet steam locomotives but incorporates a number of differences to bring her in line with modern construction practices – such as using ‘off the shelf’ ball valves.
She arrived in March 2004 for initial test runs whilst we were closed to the public. ’Dame Ann’ ended up staying for several months whilst the formalities for her export to America were completed, and during this time was steamed once or twice a month and used on passenger trains.
In July 2004 she left for shipping to her new home at Wales West in Alabama, where she remains in operating condition today.
